Career Opportunity

We are currently seeking four (4) Track Welder Trainees. These positions are on a 40-hour work-week. The work will normally be performed on the following shifts: 1. Sunset 2. Night 3. Night 4. Day; with the following off days: 1. Fri/Sat/Sun 2. Thurs/Fri 3. Sat/Sun 4. Thurs/Fri; however, start-times and off-days may vary as directed by management. The primary work location will be 1. Dundas West 2. Greenwood Shop 3. Greenwood Shop 4. Greenwood Shop, however reporting locations will vary as dictated by work assignments. The Trainees will be required to work various shifts as part of the 3-year training period to allow exposure to various aspects of the work, and afford the opportunity to work with accomplished welders.

This is varied and moderately-complex electric and/or acetylene welding, cutting and grinding work performed in the shop, yard, or other TTC properties. This includes track bonding, cad welding and work related to these procedures and related work. May occasionally perform and direct a crew during thermite welding operations on trackwork as required. The work is performed under the direction of supervisory staff.

What You Will Do

Setting up and operating various types of cutting and welding equipment; use a variety of oxy-acetylene and arc welding processes (e.g. MIG, TIG, stick, and flux core.) Weld or braze various metals (e.g. aluminum, high and low-carbon steel, stainless steel, manganese, steel iron, brass, copper, bronze etc.) utilizing various metal fillers and air arc cutting equipment. Fabricate a wide variety of jigs, devices for track construction/maintenance. Performing various rail welding work in surface/subway systems using electric, oxy-acetylene, thermite and CAD welding processes and equipment.

This involves:

• Seam welding track-plates, combination plates, expansion joints, as well as rebuilding worn rail heads, guard rail on curves, special trackwork castings, welding jog plates, etc.;
• Performing general emergency work such as freeing frozen track switches and mechanisms, making temporary repairs to defective rail joints, etc.;
• Operating a truck which may include a towed vehicle in order to transport tools, materials, and personnel to work sites;
• Setting out track zone lights, flags and/or impassable track set-ups in strict accordance with published safety regulations;
• Performing related duties as assigned;

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

• Require training normally obtained through the completion of a Grade 12 education technical program or its recognized equivalent as determined by the assessment of education credentials by the TTC Operations Training Centre;
• Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, and published operating/safety rules and regulations;
• Must have a valid class “G” province of Ontario driver’s licence, or better, and pass the written and practical tests required for a class “DZ” driver’s licence;
• Must be able to attend and successfully complete all portions of the training to sustain the trainee status;
• Must be respirator fitted and able to use respirators;
• The successful candidate will be classified as a Track Welder Trainee for a period of up to 3 years, during which time the applicable training will be provided;
• The successful candidate will be locked into the Track Welder Trainee position for a period of 3 years and will not be entitled to bid for job vacancies or participate in Master Sign-ups or Bumps until the completion of the 3-year training period;
• Upon successful completion of the classroom and the on-the-job training has been obtained, the candidate will be classified as a Track Welder in wage group 8 and must remain in the classification for a period of 18 months with the ability to bid to higher classifications during this period, as per the Maintenance Seniority Regulations.
