General Accountability

Reporting to the Manager – Corporate Communications, the incumbent is responsible for the management of communications projects; overall administration and editorial direction of corporate publications and communications; and provision of internal and external communications plans and communications products that enhance corporate image and relations with internal and external audiences. The incumbent will be focused on supporting the TTC’s corporate communication at the TTC’s Transit Control Centre.


In particular, the incumbent will act as a TTC spokesperson and will write and disseminate media material, support internal communications related to TTC service and assist with media relations and plans. The Senior Communications Advisor also provides communications advice and counsel to internal clients, senior management and executives and TTC Board members.


Key Job Functions

  • Acts as spokesperson for the TTC;
  • Oversees communication projects and works with teams of communications professionals;
  • Provides direction and guidance as project lead;
  • Ensures deadlines are met;
  • Develops strategic and tactical corporate communications plans;
  • Oversees the planning, writing and production of communications products for print and on-line that enhance corporate image and relations with internal and external audiences;
  • Writes and develops issue notes and briefing notes (regarding controversial or high profile issues) in a timely manner for dissemination to CEO, TTC Executives, Senior Management and/or TTC Board;
  • Provides advice and counsel to CEO, TTC Executives, Senior Management and/or TTC Board members as required;
  • Maintains excellent working relationships with internal clients;
  • Develops and delivers communication strategies for responding to media queries on various TTC issues, products and services within various timelines, from daily to crisis;
  • Establishes and maintains Toronto media networks and good working relationships, including with mainstream media, bloggers and transit advocates;
  • Researches, writes and disseminates media material, including media advisories, news releases and backgrounders, including posts to TTC Website;
  • Plans and executes media events, working collaboratively with TTC Special Events staff and other order of government;
  • Co-ordinates requests received to feature the TTC in TV documentaries/shows;
  • Promotes a respectful work and service environment that supports diversity, inclusion, and is free from harassment and discrimination. Provides leadership in the development and implementation of inclusive and accessible policies, programs and/or services for employees and customers in accordance with TTC's commitments and obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and Related Orders, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and TTC's policies.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree/diploma, combined with seven to ten years of directly related work experience. Experience in transit is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of the corporate communications field including various forms of internal and external communications such as printed materials, social media, video, film, TV and radio.
  • Excellent research, writing, editing and presentation skills.


Additional Requirements

  • Must possess sound judgement and the ability to exercise discretion and sensitivity; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish effective internal/external working relationships.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills as well as strong planning and organizational skills to co-ordinate multiple projects from concept to execution and meet time sensitive deadlines.
  • Strong technical skills in Microsoft Office combined with applied knowledge of desktop design, publication/production/presentation software and new technologies, digital and social media communications and print, television and/or radio production.
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and related orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize work while meeting stringent deadlines.
  • Must possess ability to manage competing priorities and demands in a rapidly changing environment
