We have an exciting opportunity for a Structural Engineer to join our talented Way Engineering team in our Streetcar Infrastructure Department!


What You Will Do

Reporting to the Senior Engineer, Design & Standards, you will be responsible for design functions associated with the maintenance and rehabilitation of TTC surface structures (e.g. tunnels, bridges, stations, track support and elevated structures) and will provide structural engineering expertise to the development of designs, specifications, technical reports and standards. You will perform structural design work and conduct evaluation and reviews of designs to ensure they meet TTC and industry standards.

Other responsibilities of your role will include:

  • Identifying design objectives, performing structural design calculations and providing detailed design specifications for structural steel and reinforced concrete structures;
  • Developing designs manually and/or with the use of structural analysis software and CADD systems; preparing specifications, cost estimates, sketches and contract documents for routine or non-complex repairs;
  • Reviewing utility work submissions and Ontario One Call excavation requests to assess impact on TTC structures;
  • Providing technical support and recommendations for structure maintenance activities including detailed visual structure and field inspections, and coordinating engineer/testing work peformed by external engineering consultants;
  • Investigating and evaluating new, existing or proposed systems, components and/or construction methods; troubleshooting operational problems, malfunctions/faults; recommending alternate design, procedures, equipment, materials, etc.
  • Performing internal and external technical design reviews to ensure TTC standards, specifications, and operational concerns are met.
  • Assisting in preparation of management reports and recommendations related to operational and design requirements;
  • Ensuring safety, hazard, security, cost, reliability, warranty, quality and other engineering issues are reported in a timely manner;
  • Taking professional responsibility for designs as required by the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO);

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO);
  • A university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Structural or Civil Engineering), or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent;
  • Substantial experience directly related to structural design, maintenance and rehabilitation of bridges, buildings, and underground structures, including structural surveying and tests;
  • Thorough knowledge of civil/structural engineering principles, methods, practices, and applicable current regulatory design codes including Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and others;
  • Sound judgement, supported by well developed analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong communication and technical report writing skills, and a proven ability to coordinate and direct the efforts of others (i.e. consultants, contractors, etc.) in order to accomplish objectives;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and relevant applications, including structural analysis and drafting software (i.e. SAP2000, STAAD, AutoCAD);
  • A valid, non-probationary class "G" Driver’s License, and the ability to travel to various project work sites;
