Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)

We are looking for an Assistant Controller to join our team in Toronto for a 12-month term contract

The purpose of Assistant Controller role is to handle financial reporting activities of Hitachi Rail GTS Canada Inc. and to extend full support to Director of Accounting in inventory closing, sales tax return, supervising the AP operation with the support of offshore team and month end closing activities including the preparation of monthly Finance Package

Key Responsibilities

Active preparation and support to month-end, year-end close and budgeting processes for Hitachi Rail GTS Canada Inc. (HRGTSCI)

  • Preparation and timely submission of group reporting (according to IFRS and Hitachi Group standards) as well as preparation and submission of quarterly statutory financial statements
  • Preparation and coordination of the monthly internal financial reporting package for Management review
  • Support in annual budget construction process
  • Performs Balance Sheet account reconciliations (must provide analytical insight that supports conclusions)
  • Preparation of monthly Income Statement comparison of Actuals to Budgets (variance analysis)
  • Preparation of monthly variance analysis of Balance Sheet to budget and forecast (must provide relevant financial information to decision makers)
  • Liaises with Corporate Central Finance Departments and related financial institutions

Support with Inventory Control

  • Perform a detailed analysis of the Excess and obsolete inventory and assist in annual physical inventory count
  • Assist in month end closing activities of inventory and support other stakeholders in the inventory related concerns

Support with Income tax and sales tax matters

  • Preparation of quarterly tax working and Income Tax package for annual corporate return based on the Canadian tax rules
  • Preparation of monthly sales tax report and filing

Other Responsibilities /tasks

  • Supervising the AP function with the support of offshore shared service team
  • Direct and/or participation in special projects at the request of management
  • Supports other Finance shared Services team members as needed
  • Ensures timely resolution of issues
  • Drives initiatives to promote streamlined processes, operational efficiency and enhanced internal controls
  • Supports new system implementations (when applicable)
  • Provides timely Finance support to operational teams as required and facilitates cross-functional communication

Required Skills And Experience

  • University degree with a specialization in accounting
  • Accounting designation (CPA-CMA, CGA or CA)
  • 7+ years’ experience in financial reporting and analysis

Preferred Skills And Experience

  • Experience with large accounting software (SAP preferred)
  • Excellent knowledge of excel, including advanced functions
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Very good team working skills
  • Experience liaising with external auditors
  • Organize workload to meet deadlines and work with little supervision
  • Must be able to work under pressure of deadlines
