We are seeking a Transportation Engineer to join our dynamic team!


Key Job Functions

Reporting to the Manager Transportation Engineering, you will manage transportation engineering projects and assignments by researching, planning and implementing operational improvements to the transportation network that benefit the public transit system in the City of Toronto to support the Operations Planning Section (a section inside the Project Development and Planning Department) activities.


  • As Transportation Engineer, you will investigate and resolve operational problems on surface routes by applying knowledge of traffic signal systems and traffic engineering principles related to traffic flow, road design/geometry, traffic gaps and queuing theories for safe bus operation, etc.
  • You will represent the department and the TTC as a technical specialist on complex internal and external studies, design/application specifics and transit priority applications including on the Eglinton East Light Rail Transit Project.
  • You will keep abreast of technological advances in Transportation Engineering.
  • As a technical specialist with respect to transit priority applications, advise City Transportation Services staff as to the optimum design/application.
  • You will conduct and/or review transit/traffic impact analyses associated with new developments and make conclusions/recommendations.
  • Analyze intersections being considered for transit priority and project the level of benefit that would result.
  • To this end, you will liaise with internal staff and with a variety of external departments and agencies (e.g. City Transportation Services, Waterfront Toronto and Metrolinx) regarding transportation engineering issues affecting the TTC including the City of Toronto’s Eglinton East Light Rail Transit Project.
  • Monitor traffic enforcement, and other traffic related matters which impact TTC services.
  • Prepare various reports, memos and letters associated with the work. Attend public meetings and make presentations as required.
  • Review computer simulation of complex intersections with a view to determine the best signal operation/geometric design for transit vehicles.
  • Identify general priority measures for transit in the City of Toronto (e.g. queue jump and dedicated bus lanes).
  • You will set up, and analyze, the results of Speed and Delay studies to identify problem locations and recommend possible courses of action.
  • You will provide leadership in the development and implementation of inclusive and accessible policies, programs and/or services for employees and customers in accordance with TTC’s commitments and obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and Related Orders, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and TTC’s policies.
  • You will participate in the TTC’s Customer Service Ambassador Program.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background including a University degree in Civil Engineering, or the equivalent, combined with several years of directly related experience is integral and will contribute to the success in this role.
  • Your application will demonstrate registration (or eligible to be registered within 2 years*) as a licenced Professional Engineer in Ontario. (Candidates not licenced as a Professional Engineer will be considered, however salary will be commensurate with experience and candidate will be hired as a Transportation Engineer in Training until a P.Eng. licence is acquired).
  • Your sound knowledge of civil engineering principles, methods and practices, specifically in Traffic Engineering and Transportation Engineering is required.
  • Excellent analytical skills; and knowledge of research methods and techniques combined with report writing skills is required.
  • Your proficiency in the use of a PC and computer applications and systems related to the work, including Synchro intersection analyses software is required.
  • Your experience with Macro, Meso and Microsimulation software would be an asset.
  • Your application will demonstrate an understanding of the City of Toronto’s traffic signal and roadway design standards including but not limited to traffic signal design, roadway design, and cycling facilities design.
