Description

The Toronto Transit Commission is currently accepting 179 Summer Student applications for Summer 2023 fulltime employment. The Summer Student employment term is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2023 to August 25, 2023 and you would be required to work for the full duration of the term. We offer a wide range of entry level and specialty positions in various locations throughout the City of Toronto.  Most positions involve working in a unionized environment. Some positions may involve working outdoors, while others may require specific licenses, skillsets and/or work experience.

 

The TTC operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  Therefore, students must be flexible and willing to work shift work, as 80% of the positions available involve working various shifts (morning, afternoon, nights), which may include working weekends and holidays.

 

Eligibility

 

         To be considered for summer student employment, you must be:

  • Eligible to work in Canada,
  • A full-time student, enrolled in full-time studies in the current Winter 2023 academic terms at a registered institution; and
  • Returning to full-time studies in the Fall 2023 academic term/year.​​​​​​​

The Toronto Transit Commission will do education, work, security and reference checks which will be used for employment assessment purposes only. Policy Update
As of August 2016, the Summer Student Program policy was updated to cap, to a maximum of three summer work terms, that a student is eligible to return (see eligibility requirements above).

Carhouse Helper (vehicle cleaner)

 Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sweep, dust and wash interior and exterior of subway cars.
  • Use of a variety of cleaning equipment necessary to do the work, such as mops, scrubbers, spray applicators, etc.
  • May be assigned special assignments throughout the summer which may include working at different subway stations; i.e. end of the line cleaning.
     

Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Will be required to successfully complete TTC’s Rule Book & WHMIS training
  • Safety footwear required (provided by the student).
     

 Shifts

  • 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.
  • 11:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
  • Rotating off days
     

 Subway Janitor

Bus / Streetcar Divisions / T&S Buildings Janitor 

TTC Office Buildings Janitor 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine janitorial duties including sweeping, mopping, garbage, recycling, scrubbing and polishing various surfaces.
  • Open and close stations, starting escalators and assisting co-workers as instructed.
  • Providing customer service usually related to directional enquires.
  • Assist in maintaining an adequate supply of station materials by informing office staff of shortages.
  • Completing routine forms, records, etc. pertaining to occurrences. Including: acts of vandalism, damage to TTC property, etc.
  • Responding to instructions for assistance by Transit Control.
  • Perform all duties as identified in the posted schedules.
  • All tasks to be performed in such a manner as to safeguard TTC property, customer safety and personal security.
     

Requirements

  • Will be required to successfully complete Subway/SRT Rule Book instruction.
  • Must successfully complete WHMIS training.
  • Required completing a two-day departmental procedure training course.
  • Be able to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Individual must be able to perform all duties with minimal supervision.
     

 Working Conditions

  • Generally, all work is light physical activity rated (occasionally moderately heavy tasks must be performed).
  • Exposure to minor injuries including slips, falls or strains.
  • Work locations are generally dusty with routine exposure to noise, inclement weather and large crowds.
  • Occasional contact with abusive customers (this includes both verbal and physical abuse).
     

 Shifts
Janitorial duties are performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (subsequently, shifts include days, afternoons, and nights with rotating off days).

 

Grounds Maintainer (Landscaper)

 Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine landscaping duties as well as general laborer duties.
  • Cut grass using self-propelled riding or small power lawn mowers.
  • Replacing sod, pick up debris, leaves, etc.; trim bushes, hedges, small trees, plant flowers and shrubs maintain plant beds, pull weeds, etc.
  • Work is mostly outside, manual tasks include digging, moving and lifting heavy materials, considerable walking, standing, and bending involving moderately heavy physical effort.
  • Intermittent heavy physical work.
  • Use of whippers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, roto-tillers, chain saws, power pruners and other landscaping tools and equipment.
  • Some interlock brick work may be required.
  • Cleaning, stocking and servicing of washrooms and perform other janitorial duties as assigned.
     

 Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Must complete the Subway/SRT Rule Book program and successfully pass the written and practical tests involved.
  • Hot and humid working conditions; must wear hard hats, gloves, glasses (provided by the TTC) and other personal protective equipment as required.
  • Safety footwear required (provided by the student).
  • Considerable walking/standing occasional climbing of steep slopes and working at track level in close proximity to moving vehicles.
  • Exposed to dirty, dusty and wet conditions and inclement weather.

 Shifts

  • Day shift - weekends off.
  • Predominantly day shift but afternoon shift and weekend work also required depending on operational needs.
